CURTIS-BEARD - WALKS WITH FRIENDS
GREG AND JENNY'S WALKING PROGRAMME
WALKS IN CONTINENTAL EUROPE
INTERNATIONAL WINE SMUGGLERS' WALK
This old favourite, first established in 1990, takes you across the Alps from Austria through Switzerland to Italy and back on the tracks of the former wine traders and their horses. To mitigate the distances involved on this circular route, the journey combines walking with a judicious amount of travel on the narrow-gauge Rhaetic Railway, including the Bernina Express, which passes through some of Eastern Switzerland's most stunning scenery. Wine cellar visit!
TRANSALPINE SILK ROUTE
This walk takes us across the Alps on some of the most fascinating and strategically important trade routes in history. Although the trails were traditionally used for the export of the much-prized Como silk, their strategic value was also appreciated by military leaders from the Roman era right through till the time of Napoleon. Many of the old roads exist today, the paving stones still clearly visible. We see remote Alpine passes and spectacular gorges, much-feared in bygone days. We descend to traditional villages, unchanged for centuries, and visit their ancient inns. And we enjoy the balmy temperatures - and excellent food and wine! - of the North Italian Alps and beautiful Lake Como.
LAKE COMO GOURMET WALK
Our popular Italian walk, organised yearly since 1992. The "Comacini" meet at the top of a mountain outside Lugano to cross the Swiss border into little known areas of Italy by the "back door". The accent throughout the holiday is on experiencing the breathtakingly beautiful scenery of Lake Como and its surroundings without rubbing shoulders with hundreds of tourists. We walk through remote mountain settlements on ancient cobbled tracks and visit isolated churches, villages and Alpine huts. We also cruise the lake by boat, stay in an interesting selection of hotels and inns, and dine in style on the haunted Comacina Island!
WINE AND CHEESE ROUTE - LAKE GENEVA TO ZERMATT
Experience the incredible contrasts Western Switzerland has to offer. Wander through the vineyards above the sub-tropical shores of Lake Geneva – and taste the products! Cross the mountains in the footsteps of the medieval cheese traders from Gruyères. See how cheese is really made in the remote chalets of the high almlands, using a technique unchanged for centuries – don’t worry, there are no tour buses here! Walk the incredible Gemmi Pass, and soak in the thermal waters of Leukerbad. And finally travel to the vast glaciers above Zermatt, for a walk offering some of the best views on the planet. The walking is combined with a great selection of scenic train journeys and features a variety of interesting and comfortable hotels and inns.
ENGLISH SW-PENINSULA COASTAL WALKS & GARDENS
PLACE TO PLACE WALKS
Relive the contrasts of our wonderful west coast! The SW Coastal Path passes through some of the most spectacular maritime scenery in Europe and the walking is exhilarating and varied. In early summer the paths are lined with all types of wild flowers, including sea pinks and rhododendrons, and the cliffs are full of nesting sea birds. At night we stay in a selection of friendly pubs, farmhouses and interesting B&Bs. During the day there are plenty of interesting stops en route - from thatched Devonian tea houses to ancient Cornish smugglers' inns! THREE DIFFERENT ITINERARIES - "KERNOW", "GO WEST!" AND "DEEP SOUTH".
CORNWALL WALKING HOLIDAY BASED NEAR LAND’S END
Enjoy some of the best coastal walking in Cornwall, based in a comfortable family-run hotel. Our daily walks take us to many spots the average tourist will not find, such as mysterious standing stones on misty moorlands, testimony to ancient Celtic times; but we also visit some better-known places, and have plenty of time to explore and enjoy them. We also offer the chance of a day trip to the fabulous Scilly Islands.
CORNWALL WALKING HOLIDAY BASED NEAR TINTAGEL
Enjoy some superb coastal walking, based just outside the Cornish village of Tintagel. Although "King Arthur's Castle" is a renowned tourist destination, you will be amazed just how many secrets the area still has in store! We visit picturesque Boscastle, with its narrow harbour; charming Port Isaac, home of "Doc Martin" and "The Fishermen's Friends", and take the boat across the golden sands of the Camel estuary to Padstow. Walk down the lane from the hotel and watch the sun set into the Atlantic. Add to all this secret valleys, magic waterfalls and a tiny church once buried in the dunes. You will not be disappointed!
TWO CENTRE WALKING HOLIDAY BASED IN NEWQUAY AND THE LIZARD PENINSULA - ENGLAND'S MOST SOUTHERLY POINT
Thanks to the many fabulous sandy beaches, the charismatic little coastal town of Newquay is now very popular with the surfing community. We shall walk along countless wide sandy beaches, hemmed in by wild rocky headlands, and discover ancient pubs and villages, hidden deep in the countryside. The last four nights are spent in the quiet village of Lizard, just a hop, skip and a jump from Lizard Point, the most southerly spot in England, and popular with artists and nature lovers. The coastal scenery here is unsurpassed - dramatic rock formations, sandy coves and traditional villages. Standing on Lizard Point you can watch the sun rise from and set into the southern sea!
